Chakra Chat: The Heart Chakra
The first time I ever tried reiki was when I was in recovery from cancer almost 10 years ago. I'd just gone through chemotherapy and radiation, and my mom thought it would be a good idea to add something a little more holistic, therapeutic, and meditative to my healing process. I easily took to the ritual of receiving reiki and the overwhelming comfort that being still brought. I didn't fully understand it, but I appreciated it. My big takeaway after a series of sessions was this, however—my heart chakra was cold.
Never having gone through reiki before and not knowing anything about the chakras, I felt mildly offended. Come to think of it, that was probably the last time I saw my neighbor / reiki master because I didn't know what to do with the information she'd just given me.
- Color: Green
- Where to spot it: At the chest
- Why it's useful: When we're in touch with our emotions in a healthy way, everything else becomes a little bit easier to access.
- Yoga pose: Cobra pose (Bhujangasana). Lay on your mat face down and bring your hands flat with the elbows bent, right beside your ribs. Keep your buttocks relaxed and the tops of the feet on the floor, a few inches apart. Take a breath in and gently push your palms down so the chest begins to rise forward and up. Make sure there's no strain on the neck or the lower back as you do this. Lift your palms slightly off the mat (just an inch) so you're sure you're engaging your back muscles and the chest naturally shines forward. Make sure your feet are planted on the floor.
I've since gone back to reiki (with someone else though—haha). Through yoga, meditation and the cards, I feel I understand the Heart Chakra a lot better. Not fully, but better. It being the fourth of the chakras, the heart lies at the junction between what's above (crown, third eye, throat) and what's below (solar plexus, sacral, root). So if, for any reason, your heart is stuck—there's an interruption in the overall flow of energy.
In hindsight, I feel that's why my heart was "cold." My lower chakras were busy giving me boost after boost to help me fight the sickness. My upper chakras were helping me rationalize my treatments and the physical pain so I could get survive the disease. In the busyness of it all, I had somehow neglected the emotional component of healing.
There's still so much left to understand about the Heart Chakra, but I love how the emotional aspect of our lives can be pondered, analyzed, and felt through it. No healing can be fully realized without healing our center, our heart.
