Chakra Chat: The Sacral Chakra
Moving up along the chakras, (we started with the Root or Base a few weeks back), we next hit up the seat of our creativity, the Sacral Chakra. Here's an at-a-glance view:
- Color: Orange
- Where to spot it: Below the navel
- Why it's useful: It stimulates creativity.
- Yoga pose: Child's pose. Come to all fours on your hands and knees, and bring your big toes to touch. Spread your knees open wider than the hips (or even as wide as the mat). Sit your bum towards your heels—if this is uncomfortable for you, slide a blanket or pillow between the backs of your thighs and your shins to give you more height. Let your forehead gently rest on a block, pillow or on the floor. Extend your hands all the way forward or sweep them to the back so they lay by the side of your legs. Breathe. Feel the movement of your belly as you exhale all the air out, allowing you come in deeper into this fold.
After my beach adventures, I retreated back into my first love—the city. Apart from architecture, what I love most about city adventures, especially in a city like New York, is the wealth of museums. Walking through the Met, the MoMA, helps stir my sacral chakra into top form.
Last year, I had the opportunity to visit the Botanical Garden and walk through a recreation of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's home. This assemblage of cacti was near an installation of her work desk—dirtied with brushes and smeared with paint, it reminded me of the sheer pleasure of diving deep into your creativity.
The sacral chakra, to me, gets your head off the result and into the process. When you're all about the act of creating, the pleasure comes from the brainstorming, the trying things out (and failing most of the time), the discovery of an unexpected solution. It may have taken a while for me to get this website up, but all the work and imagining I put into it has been well worth it.
