Dream Tarot Decks: What's On Your Wishlist?

A couple of days ago, I uploaded a video interview I did with two of my friends, Macy and Patty. Unfortunately, the last 10 minutes of the video disappeared and I was absolutely gutted that a segment I spent so much time editing was *poof* gone!

Macy, Patty, and I form Future Media Empire, which is a pop culture newsletter we send out every so often on TV and movies, music, and books. Subscribe to us here!

So I thought I’d just bring this portion onto the blog because our subject matter was too interesting to leave out in the ether, never to be discovered by anyone. So, I asked my tarot-enthusiast friends:

What tarot decks would you dream into existence if you could?

I thought it would be interesting to hear from people who are into tarot, but aren’t tarot-obsessed or aspiring tarot professionals, you know? If you’ve been part of the tarot community for a while, you can easily slip into the black hole of familiar deck creators, themes, and publishers. Here’s a fresh take on a subject we all love, from people who have their own practice but aren’t 24/7 cards lingers.

In keeping with our recent binge of Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club, Macy thought that book covers would be an interesting treatment for the tarot. I totally see it, guys! This aesthetic is totally my bag. I’m currently reading “Paperback Crush” which tackles all the books I grew up with (and still have in my attic), so I know this is possible.

I mean, check out this picture of me picking up a paperback at The Last Bookstore in LA last year. BTW, I really regret not buying this.

HARRY POTTER, EXCEPT JK ROWLING’S CANCELLED RIGHT NOW, SO…

Patty says that any fandom would be perfect for a tarot deck since tarot is basically a framework that we can use for practically anything. One of the most obvious fandoms would be Harry Potter—which reminds me of the HP tour we took in Edinburgh for my 40th birthday last year. Ah, travel. What a concept, eh?

Tarot, but make it fashion

She also mentioned her fascination with the Met Gala (ah, the Met Gala—another concept), which Patty actually did a fascinating blog post on in 2018, when the theme was Catholicism and the outfits were very very tarot-esque.

k-dramas galore

Our common friend, Mimi, got a special mention in the conversation (that got deleted), too. Mimi has been heavy into the K-dramas during the pandemic and she said it would be so fun to have a K-drama deck. I know that would totally be a sellout, but I’m not too sure how photo royalties and permissions would go, given that all these shows are terribly huge cash cows.

Any Korean drama fans here?

illustrator-based tarot decks

As for me, I’m a fan of illustrators Anna Bond of Rifle Paper Co. and Nina Cosford.

Nina Cosford’s work is quirky, smart, and very modern (which I feel is super my style). I feel like she would do a really light, fun take on the tarot archetypes. I’m so happy I was actually able to score a portrait by her earlier this year!

Anna Bond, on the other hand has a beautifully distinct style. While she’s known for her florals, she also does some portraits that I think would look so so precious within the tarot framework. She also does gorgeous lettering that I feel would just up the ante.

How about you, what’s topping your dream tarot deck wish list? Leave a comment and let’s talk!

And if you want to each up on my convo with Macy and Patty, where we talk about how we use tarot and magic in everyday (non-witchy) life, head over to the video linked below.

Unfortunately Mercury Retrograde reared its ugly head and cut 10 minutes out of our convo, but I hope you enjoy anyway :) I chat with Macy and Patty about ho...
